Body Freedom March
« on: November 12, 2020, 08:30:17 PM »
Naturist pride.

The concept of 'Pride' isn't original. Past and current events in London and around the country include S&M Pride,  Gay Pride,  and Sexual Freedom Pride,  all of which promote their own ideas,  partly political and partly as a way of uniting and advancing the morale of those already involved.
An annual 'Nude Pride' event in the form of a parade or social gathering would be a trailblazer for being the first public world event to promote and celebrate nudity- what we are and ever shall be.

Like all causes,  the Naturist movement has had it's share of in fighting,  personality clashes and rivalry over the decades.  'Nude Pride ' could  not only serve as a way to offset such problems, but also clarify commonly held misconceptions on the legalities of Naturism, de escalate tensions, highlighting Naturist similarities as opposed to differences. Naturism,  after all, goes back as far, if not further than Gay Liberation and should get the recognition it rightfully deserves.

It would be an omission for me not include the phenomenon of the Naked Bike Rides as an analogy here. They are firmly established annual events in the UK and Worldwide. Although they involve nudity, their main objective is to highlight ecological issues. The Naked Bike Rides would have been unthinkable in the UK moral climate of just a couple of decades ago.  Now, however,It has become a fun event,  popular with locals and tourists alike,  and so importantly decreased stigmas wrongly associated with Naturism. It was the first event to successfully promote public nudity.

It's  my belief that a 'Nudity or Naturist Pride' celebration of Naturism could enhance the success achieved by the bike rides. I'm aware such an event takes much organising, but once established,  more people, including advertisers, would wish to nail their colours to the mast.

This sounds like a brilliant idea. Regular Naturist Prides would provide a perfect opportunity to bring naturism out into the open and help to raise awareness. I would be keen to see how this develops.

It sounds to me like a good idea, though I'm not sure I like the name "Pride" as this seems to align it with many other demonstrations which are in some way sex related.
As with many good ideas, it will need a champion to put it into practice. Is anyone volunteering?

So what happened at the 28 Jan Mancoll meeting regarding Harvey's nude march proposal, along with Adam Scarborough's similar idea and comments from the NAG Clacton people?  Has any more consideration been given?

I like the idea of a naturist march, but agree with a  previous poster that Pride may not be a suitable name.. it is associated in the general population as an expression of sexuality.

In addition to a march, and because if a recent conversation I had with a new naturist who thought public nudity was only legal at designated sites or in organized rallies, may I suggest a small add-on? In order to better promote naturism as normal in wider society, small groups (2-3) might have even more impact.. so, as a lead in to the main March, some volunteers could undress say 5 -10 minutes walk away from the meeting point and converge so that a large area experiences a small amount of nudity simultaneously. This would give the impression that nudity by individuals is normal.

It is still being considered, but we have to take into account safety of attendees IE abuse issues some of the collective are worried about this issue because we would have a duty of care.to participants. However, you can post a message through the forum to Adam maybe the 2 of you can get together and resolve any issues, I still think that London would be the best place.

I appreciate London has the biggest turnout for wnbr, but Birmingham is more accessible for the rest of the country. Even city centre parking is affordable.

While there might be the odd bit of verbal abuse from the ignorant, anything more is unlikely... apart from the one Clayton incident detailed elsewhere have there been any worrying incidents at wnbr events?

There have been many attempts to organize a wnbr in Birmingham, but due to the demographics it has proven not to be possible. If you would like to organize one yourself remember that it is a protest, but the police have to be informed first then the council.
Remember that it is a protest, and it cannot be stopped. It is your right as a citizen to protest!!
You will soon find out why any naked protest in Birmingham is just not possible.

Does it have to be a 'protest'? Can a group of people not meet for a walk through a city? Not protesting anything, just exercising freedom. Then nobody has to be informed? (Never thought about this before, probably obviously to you guys!)

I believe it would be best to have Body Freedom Marching in London where it is safer. So we can have more police Support
Birmingham can be a risky situation, We don't want to end up shot down or be blow up by the terrorism (museum)
Police may not likely protect us there.

There are several things to consider, firstly Birmingham has a large Muslim population and I have been told that Muslims have a body problem in that nakedness is an offence to god.
The Cambridge ride has been advised that if they were to use a certain area of Cambridge, the police could not guarantee their safety. (this is a Muslim area)
Whilst you have a right to protest, you also have a duty of care to participants.
The type of gathering that you envisage would come under one of two categories, the first to consider is an event. To do one of these, you would need permission from the council, police liaison and show that you had insurance, and that you could manage traffic in the area. And if the council was going to be difficult, a music licence.(I have come across all of these plus liabilities' indemnity for damage to buildings and public works). So an Event is out of the question. On top of all that, they could still stop you.
Demonstration/protest. As I have previously stated, you have a right to protest and nobody can stop you. Non-sexual nakedness in a public place is legal. But you still pave a duty of care to participants

Most W.N.B.R. Rides ride with the co-operation of the local police. And the local council. Because with  their help, the ride is safer. So advice is obtained from them as to route and other issues, in most cases the organizers are informed of any new problems on the day.

Unofficially, one organiser who tried to organize a naked ride in Birmingham was told by the police that they were likely to be stoned. This is why nobody has tried since.  Best of luck if you do decide to try. Please look at our legal guidance area.

Thank you for that in depth reply. How sad that a small minority can impose their ways on a society.. Birmingham has many more of Indian descent than Middle Eastern and India has a long established acceptance of naturist practices
But you have to choose your battles I guess..

actually there are only 5 naturist beaches in india despite its size and mors of them are for tourists.
Some indians are also muslims and thjey would have the same body issue.

Phil,
Just for completeness, you put a smarter travel link above.. this is a quote

The reality is that the Birmingham crime rate is actually lower than other cities of similar size, and that Birmingham is commonly cited as one of the U.K.’s safer place
